Part of the Louisiana Purchase, "Bleeding Kansas" became the center of the slavery controversy in the years leading up to the U.S. Civil War. Despite the Dust Bowl of the 1930s and a reputation for tornadoes fostered by The Wizard of Oz, Kansas has grown with industry.
