What is the difference between the Regional Branch and the Regional subcategories under my topic?

The Regional branch includes all sites that are about, of interest to, or focus on, a particular geographic region. The Regional categories under a Subject branch contain sites that have a global focus, where the regional aspects are incidental rather than the primary subject matter.

You will typically find the same site listed in the Regional branch and in a subject branch (e.g. Arts, Business, Reference, etc.). Duplicate listings of a site (once in the Regional branch and once in the topical branch of the directory) should be made when the site has a topical and a regional focus. Duplicate categories in the Regional and topical branches, however, are not permitted.

Do I have to create Regional subcategories under my topic?

No. Create regional subcategories when no other type of organization (e.g. by subtopic) will work.

I have some sites that are regionally focused in my topic category. They aren't organized in any fashion. Are they going to be moved to Regional anyway?

No. However, you should submit them to the appropriate Regional category so they can be listed there.

When am I permitted to create Regional subcategories under my topic?

Create regional subcategories when no other type of organization will work. You are permitted to create regional subcategories in the subject branches under the following circumstances:

The regional subcategory under the topic should not duplicate an existing category in the Regional branch. Always do a search before creating a new category to make sure you are not duplicating an existing category. If duplicate categories are found, they will be merged.

Deciding whether or not to organize a particular topic by region can be a real challenge. It is impossible for these guidelines to give you answers for each unique situation you come across. Editors should follow the organization of similar topics and keep in mind that consistent organization of sites is paramount. If you can not decide between creating regional subcategories in your subject branch or moving sites to the Regional branch, you should err on the side of sending sites to the Regional branch.

May I "double list" a site, once in my topical category and once in Regional?

Yes. Absolutely. This is the rule rather than the exception. See the next question for more information.

What Standards and Procedures should I follow?

Creating Regional Subcategories

Input Necessary @links

Double Listing Sites

If you have created Regional subcategories under your topic, you should list all sites twice. You should list the site once in your regional subcategory, and submit the site to the most specific topical category in the Regional branch.

I have a topical category that includes a regional listing of "local" resources categorized by state. Will these state categories go to Regional?

If your category does not duplicate a similar category in Regional, you may maintain the regional categories under your topic. However, you should also submit these sites to the specific locality categories in Regional.

Make sure the proper @links are made at the state level in Regional to prevent any potential duplication. The @links should point directly to the state subcategory under your topical category.

If your category does duplicate a similar category in Regional, the two categories will be merged.

Business: Transportation and Logistics: Maritime: Ports: North America: United States: California lists all ports in the state of California. The individual sites should also be listed under their localities in Regional. If there was a duplicate Ports category in California ... say Regional: North_America: United_States: California: Transportation: Ports, then the two categories would be merged. Most likely they would be merged into Business, since that's were similar categories for ports in other states live.
If the category is a duplicate, where will it be merged?
It depends on where the sites are most appropriately placed according to the above guidelines.
If my regional listing of "local" resources categorized by state are moved to Regional, will they move intact, or will the sites be dispersed to the proper locality categories?
The sites will get dispersed to their proper locality categories.
If I have a topical category broken down by state, what do I do when the list grows to the point I want to organize by localities?

If you have a grouping of sites for a specific locality, do not further build out your category by locality. Create a topical category under the locality category in the Regional branch that corresponds to your subject category, and put the locality sites there. You should create an @link from state category under your topic to the locality/topical category in Regional. Any duplicate listings for the locality in your state category should be deleted.

Under News: Newspapers: Regional: United States: California the following links are among several sites listed:

  • Daily Bruin
  • LA Weekly
  • Los Angeles Daily News
  • Los Angeles Times
  • New Times Los Angeles

Under Regional: North America: United States: California: Localities: L: Los Angeles: News and Media you have the following links:

  • Daily Bruin
  • LA Weekly
  • Los Angeles Daily News
  • Los Angeles Times
  • New Times Los Angeles

Let's say you want to create a Newspapers category under Regional: ...: Los_Angeles: News_and_Media

  1. Request that the category be created either by contacting the editor of the News_and_Media category, a meta, an editall, an admin, or post a message in the Rename/Delete/Move/Sort_Requests thread in the Regional forum.
  2. A person with the appropriate editing privileges will create Regional: North_America: United_States: California: Los_Angeles: News_and_Media: Newspapers; which will include all the newspaper sites listed above.
  3. The duplicate listings under News: Newspapers: Regional: United_States: California will be deleted.
  4. An Los Angeles@ link will be created under News: Newspapers: Regional: United_States: California pointing to Regional: North_America: United_States: California: Los_Angeles: News_and_Media: Newspapers.
I have a list of regional government sites that are germane to my topic. Can I organize these by region under my topic?
Yes. You should also submit the sites to the Government subcategory under the appropriate Regional category.
